“i don’t know when, i don’t know how, but i know something’s starting right now…” – Ariel
just watch The Little Mermaid; see Prince Eric’s grand ship crashing through the waves as seagulls fly overhead, wait for the music’s crescendo and listen as they begin to tell the story of King Triton and the merpeople. hold your breath and wait for Ariel’s grand, albeit tardy, entrance. get carried away by the magic and beauty and romance of one of Disney’s best works of art.
originally released in 1989, The Little Mermaid is 25 years old this year. how many of us remember growing up with the VHS, played over an over again on mom’s VCR? it has always been a favorite, and it is just as good today as it was back then.
“the only way to get what you want is to become human yourself…” -Ursula
ariel is fabulous and fierce, with a powerful drive to go for what she longs for; a chance to live amongst humans. she falls in love with Prince Eric, who is not only a total babe, but sweet and kind, and the two battle some serious obstacles to finally find their happily ever after.
every song is spectacular; the movie even won the 1989 Academy Award for Original Score and Original Song for Under The Sea. it’s hard to choose a favorite, though Part of Your World, sung by Ariel (voiced by the incredibly talented Jodi Benson) gives us chills, and Sebastian’s Kiss the Girl still makes us swoon.
